Fixing a Recoverable Partition with PTEDIT

Situation:
If an operation has been interrupted or a power outage occurs during the execution of a PartitionMagic process, the partition type may appear as a Recoverable Partition. Recoverable Partitions occur when the partition type indicator could not be returned to its original value. In most cases the data is recoverable by returning the partition type indicator to its original value. However in some cases, depending on when the operation was interrupted, the data is corrupt and cannot be recovered gracefully.

This document explains the process of using PTEDIT to fix a Recoverable Partition.

Solution:

WARNING: This document describes making changes to your partition table. Making any changes other than those described below can cause you to lose access to one or more partitions, and could possibly result in data loss. Follow the instructions very carefully.

You can find PTEDIT on your product CD in the UTILITY folder. Also, you can download Ptedit.zip from the Symantec FTP site.

To fix a Recoverable Partition using PTEDIT from the recovery environment

  1. Boot the computer into the recovery environment using the PartitionMagic CD. For instructions, see How to boot a computer into the recovery environment.
  2. In the recovery environment main window, click Advanced Recovery Tasks.
  3. Click Utilities.
  4. Click Edit Partition Table.
  5. Locate the Recoverable Partition (partition type 3C).
If the Recoverable Partition occurred on a logical partition, clic GoToEPBR to locate the correct partition.
  6. Click the Type field that is associated with the 3C partition.
  7. Click Set Type.
  8. Select the appropriate partition type.
For example, click FAT32 if the partition type was FAT32 before the Recoverable Partition.
  9. Save the changes and exit.

To fix a Recoverable Partition using PTEDIT from the rescue diskettes

  1. Boot the computer using the first PartitionMagic rescue diskette.
  2. When prompted to insert the second rescue diskette, press Ctrl+C, and then press Y to halt the batch process.
  3. At the command prompt, type the following:

    ptedit
  4. Locate the Recoverable Partition (partition type 3C).
If the Recoverable Partition occurred on a logical partition, click GoToEPBR to locate the correct partition.
  5. Click the Type field that is associated with the 3C partition.
  6. Click Set Type.
  7. Select the appropriate partition type.
For example, click FAT32 if the partition type was FAT32 before the Recoverable Partition.
  8. Save the changes and exit.

If the system does not boot properly at this point, run a directory listing (DIR) on the drive, and look for a DYN_ROOT entry. A DYN_ROOT entry indicates that the original root directory has been relocated but can, in most cases, be restored. If the directory listing appears as random ASCII code or unrecognizable characters, the partition is likely corrupted and cannot be recovered.

WARNING: If the root directory appears as a DYN_ROOT, do not "SYS" the drive. Modifications made to the drive while in this state can reduce the probability of recovery. Contact Symantec Technical Support for further assistance.
