Error 504: "Unable to find autochk.exe" after making a change with PartitionMagic 8.0
Situation:
After you make a change to a partition using PartitionMagic 8.0 and reboot the computer, you see "Error 504" or "Unable to find autochk.exe.
Solution:
To resolve this error, you need to make a change to the Windows registry.
WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.
To edit the Windows registry
- Exit all open programs.
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type the following
regedit
- Click OK.
- In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\
- Click the SessionManager folder icon to select it.
- On the Edit menu, click New > String Value.
A "New Value #1" appears in the right pane.
- Right-click New Value #1, and then click Rename.
- Type the following (including the period):
BootExecute.
Note: The name of the value must be entered exactly as shown above, including capitalization and the period at the end. Press Enter.
- Press Enter.
- In the right pane, double-click the BootExecute. icon.
- In the Edit String dialog box, in the Value Data field, either copy and paste, or type the following exactly as it appears:
autocheck autochk *
- Click OK.
- Exit the Registry Editor.
- Reboot the computer.
The error should no longer occur.
