Error 109: "Partition ends after end of disk" when using PartitionMagic or PartInfo

Situation:
PartitionMagic or PartInfo reports Error 109: "Partition ends after end of disk."

Solution:
There are several possible solutions to this error.

The error occurs on a drive larger than 137 GB
If Error 109 occurs on a drive larger than 137 GB, it can indicate that the drive is not being addressed properly. Drives larger than 137 GB require 48-bit Logical Block Addressing, and if this is not enabled in Windows, Partition Magic will report this error. To enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing, follow the instructions in the Microsoft document that corresponds to your version of Windows:

For Windows 2000: Mirrored Drives Larger Than 137 GB Perform Slowly (Article ID: 314695)
For Windows XP: How to enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing support for ATAPI disk drives in Windows XP (Article ID: 303013)

You have an add-on PCI hard drive controller card
This error can sometimes occur in conjunction with add-on PCI hard drive controller cards when the controller does not read the drive information properly. In these cases, contact the manufacturer of the controller card, or connect the drive directly to the motherboard on the main IDE channel.

Note: In most cases, unless you have added an extra hard drive controller card to your system yourself, you probably do not have an add-on card. Most commercial systems come with built-in hard drive controllers.

Neither of the above applies or works
If you do not have a hard drive larger than 137 GB or an add-on hard drive controller card, this indicates an error with either the partition table or the Master Boot Record on the drive.

To resolve the problem

  1. Start the computer from a bootable floppy disk.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following DOS command:

    fdisk /mbr

This command replaces the Master Boot Record on the primary hard disk.
  3. Restart the computer.

If the error still occurs, the only option is to back up any information in the affected partition, and then delete and recreate the partition.

Technical Information:
This error occurs if the ending cylinder value for the last partition on the drive is larger than the listed total number of cylinders for the drive. This error can be generated if the partition table or the master boot record on the drive has corrupted or incorrect data or if the drive is not being read correctly by Windows or by the motherboard.
